Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray the Lord my soul to keep;

If I should die before I wake,

I pray the Lord my soul to take.

A Christian prayer that many children have prayed over the years. True peace comes when we let the Lord keep us and save us. He is the only One who can. People experience tragedy every day. Often tragedy hits close to home.

Jesus had spent time with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. It must have been a good amount of time; He was impacted by their friendship. We read, “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” (John 11:5). Now, they were experiencing sickness that would quickly lead to Lazarus’ death. There is so much in this chapter that we can learn about Jesus but for tonight let’s focus on this: “Jesus wept.” John 11:35

JESUS WEPT. Never forget this. God incarnate became like you and me. He experienced friendship, love, sickness and death on a human level. In this moment seeing His friends grieving... Jesus wept. Isn’t that enough to meditate on for a moment? Our God wept for us.

Maybe today you were overcome with emotion, maybe tragedy hit close to home. Consider that He knows what you are walking through and dealing with, and He has compassion for you. Have you spoke to Him today about what is going on? Mary and Martha did… you should too!

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray the Lord my soul to keep;

If I should die before I wake,

I pray the Lord my soul to take.
