Generosity comes in many forms. As we grow in following Christ so should our generosity. Whether you believe in the tithe or not consider this chapter.

This Scripture is sharing about churches in Macedonia. How they are expressing a generous heart financially even during a tough time. They didn’t allow what little they had stop them from expressing selflessness and abundant generosity.

Paul says, “For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.” 2 Corinthians 8:3-5

The New Testament goes beyond the tithe but urges the church to be generous. We see the Old Testament saints giving out of their abundance but the New Testament church giving out sacrifice. The Bible says about Jesus, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9

Notice Paul says, “I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others.” 2 Corinthians 8:8

In the same thought I don’t speak as a commandment but would ask you to examine your heart, and not just financially. Let’s say 10% for a starting point with your TIME, TALENT, & TREASURES. If you looked at your calendar, would it show 10% of your time allotted to Christ? If you looked at your talents, would you see you pouring into others and teaching others with 10% of those gifts? Would you be able to see your generosity from your checking account?

Paul says at the end of this chapter, “Therefore show to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love and of our boasting on your behalf.” 2 Corinthians 8:24

Would there be proof of your love in these things and something to boast in Christ on a personal level in these areas? Examine your heart, examine your life, and take it to the Lord. Let’s all grow in our generosity!
