It’s believed this psalm was David’s encouragement to Solomon as he told him the Lord would use him to build the temple. A father’s reminder to his son as he endeavors through the journey of life.

In verses five- and six-night, day, darkness, and noonday are mentioned. Night is from 6pm to midnight, day is 6am to noon, darkness is from midnight to 6am, and noonday is from noon to 6pm.

Psalms 91:5-6 says, “You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.”

What is the encouragement from one generation to the next? The Lord will be with you and always protect you, through all seasons. Be encouraged... telling myself this as well. The Lord has this! The psalm ends, “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.” Psalms 91:14-16

Notice the “Me” and “I”. The psalm went from second and third person to first person and the words of the Lord. Set your love upon Him. He will deliver you; He knows your name, He is with you in your time of trouble, He is your salvation. Be encouraged! His promises are forevermore.
