Jesus begins His teaching two chapters earlier, “And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:” Matthew 5:1-2

These words were meant for His disciples yet as Jesus closes, we read, “And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” Matthew 7:28-29

A crowd ended up joining during His teaching. How many of those in the crowd were wowed by Jesus’ teachings yet missed the purpose of His words? It wasn’t just a teaching Jesus was putting forth. He was instructing on how to interact with the Father in every area of life. Jesus even says people will prophesy, do miracles, and cast out demons in the Lord’s name without really knowing Him. Instruction… yes… but knowing Him is eternal life.

Yes, enjoy and follow the teachings of Jesus. But look for the Lord in the moments of your day. Our life becomes full when we see the Lord in each moment: they could be difficult and trying, or heaven sent and full of joy. But He is there in every moment. Today, when you’re at the gas station, sitting alone in the car, in line at the drive thru or grocery store, at your desk or with your kids, on the job site or at school, sick or healthy… He is there. Just acknowledge Him, talk with Him… “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:11
