Father… please help!

Jesus finds the disciples arguing with the scribes after failing to cast out a mute spirit. Jesus does what they couldn’t and the disciples question Jesus on why they weren’t able too. Shortly after, as they come to Capernaum we find the disciples arguing about who would be the greatest. Jesus replies, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” Mark 9:35

Then John tells Jesus they saw someone who doesn’t follow them casting out demons in Jesus’ name. Jesus responds, “For he who is not against us is on our side.” Mark 9:40

Did you catch it while reading Mark 9? The disciples witnessed others doing what they weren’t able to do in the recent moment. They had just failed where others were succeeding. Could it have been their response was built upon their recent failure?

We can get shortsighted on the work of God throughout many different means, peoples, and groups. Maybe in a moment we are striving while others are thriving. How do we respond to His work through others during our own difficult times? May we celebrate the work of the Lord no matter what season we’re walking through.

Father, help us to celebrate victory in the church. Even if it looks different than we expect. Even if it’s through others than ourselves. Give us a heart to celebrate Your work in all places, with all people, with a servant’s heart. In Jesus name, AMEN!
