His character on full display.
The Lord continues to speak through Jeremiah's prophetic voice. For so long, we have read the words of the Lord through Jeremiah, calling His people to repentance. When they refused, judgment was proclaimed. Yet even in the midst of judgment, the character of the Lord is on full display as He gives His people a future hope, the promise of restoration.
Jeremiah writes: "But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."" Jeremiah 31:33-34
The writer of Hebrews quotes this passage when explaining the new covenant fulfilled through Jesus. Even in Israel's rebellion, God remained faithful to His promises, and He remains faithful still.
This should stir hope in us. If God remained faithful to His covenant promises even through Israel's repeated unfaithfulness, can we not trust Him to remain faithful to all He has promised His people in Christ?
Paul writes, "If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself."
God's promises are sure. Throughout Scripture, we see the evidence of His faithfulness despite the hardness and weakness of the human heart.
May the character of God transform our lives. As we look to Him and see His faithfulness, may the Promise Keeper produce in us a more faithful character. One that trusts Him, obeys Him, and reflects Him to the world around us.
