It's on...
There is so much to unpack in Ezekiel 18. The Lord speaks to His people, who are attempting to blame their circumstances on others, specifically the generations before them. There was a popular proverb during this time that Jeremiah also records in his writings.
""What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying: 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children's teeth are set on edge'?" Ezekiel 18:2
This proverb speaks to the sins of previous generations and their effects on those who follow. While it is true that our decisions today can impact generations to come, the Lord makes it clear that each person is ultimately accountable for their own sin.
The people of Israel were questioning the fairness of God's ways rather than taking responsibility for their own unfaithfulness. But the Lord reminds them that His ways are just and that they are accountable for their own obedience or disobedience.
And the same is true for us. We are responsible for our own decisions. Yes, we live in a world affected by sin, and the choices of others can certainly impact our lives. But each of us is accountable for how we respond to the Lord and whether we choose to follow Him.
I'm so thankful that because of the finished work of Christ, those who place their faith in Him no longer stand condemned for their sins. Jesus bore the judgment we deserved! What incredible grace!
But that grace doesn't remove our responsibility to walk in obedience. Rather, it should compel us to pursue Christ daily, surrendering our hearts to Him and allowing Him to make us more like Jesus.
We are accountable for our actions, but praise the Lord that through the cross, the burden of sin and condemnation has been lifted for those who are in Christ!
