You can't have your cake and eat it too! We often desire to do it our way, while wanting the blessing of the Lord. This happened a lot with Jacob.

Esau is running to meet his brother, Jacob is fearing for his life, but then the gift is accepted by Esau. In that culture a gift would not be accepted by an enemy. So, the acceptance showed forgiveness was granted. The brothers reunited. Still Jacob tells Esau to go ahead of him and then Jacob heads west towards Succoth. God had told Jacob to go where he met with Him which was Bethel. So, Esau was more south in Seir, Bethel was central, and Succoth was east towards the coast if you were to look on a map.

Anyway, the Lord said Bethel, Jacob goes to Succoth. Not only does he go to Succoth look what he does, don’t miss is, “And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, built himself a house, and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.” Genesis 33:17

This is the first time he built a house. He had been living in tents. This man built a house in his disobedience, but he wanted the blessing. Remember, he had just wrestled for the blessing then his next action is to build a house in his disobedience.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too! I find myself doing the same thing at times, maybe you do too? “Father assures me of this” I say, yet I keep my own marching orders. “Help me Father”, but then I do it my way instead of His.

Father, forgive me please. I just simply want to honor with You my life. Lead me, and in that leading give me the strength to follow you with all I am. Thank you for your grace that transforms me. Thank you for this Word today. In Jesus name, AMEN.
