The other night I was explaining the Trinity to my small boys. God being one as three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

The Lord tells Moses to write a song and teach it to the Israelites. The song is rich with goodness, but one thing sticks out today, “Do you thus repay the Lord, you foolish and senseless people? Is not he your father, who created you, who made you and established you? … “He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions, the Lord alone guided him, no foreign god was with him.” (Deuteronomy 32:6, 10-12)

“…is He not your Father, who created you, who made you, and who established you?” There are only a few references in the Old Testament of the truth God as our Father. This reference along with Isaiah 64:8, Jeremiah 3:19, and Jeremiah 31:9. Yet in the New Testament God as Father occurs throughout the gospels and epistles. Jesus was the first to refer to God in an endearing way, “And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” (Mark 14:36)

By Christ sacrifice and our faith in Him we’ve been adopted, chosen, accepted, and made His child. Paul would write, “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,” (Romans 8:15-16)

No matter what example you had for a father you have a perfect Father. Who is fully truth and without injustice; righteous and upright (v4). Who instructs, encircles, keeps, and calls us the apple of His eye (v16). So call out to Him as “Abba, Father” He is good indeed!
