“God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6 partial)

Stephen before the Jewish leadership of the day. These men were proud of their heritage. Patriots of their day. Stephen is falsely accused of speaking blasphemies. “Then the high priest said, “Are these things so?”” Acts 7:1

How does Stephen respond? He goes thru the details of their history as a nation and people. He talks about events they would be proud of historically. Even bringing up the Lord established them as a people and nation. Then Stephen says, ““You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers,” Acts 7:51-52

We too can be so proud of our heritage we overlook the rebelliousness and the hardness of hearts throughout history. The Lord’s kingdom is more important than any earthly kingdom. His plans and purposes are always greater than one nation or people. Jesus came to seek and save the lost. There’s a balance for sure but do you find yourself fighting more for your heritage and patriotism than you do considering your sin and salvation? What about the fight for souls for eternity? Let’s walk in humility, receive His grace, and take seriously the gravity of sin. Let’s seek and save the lost just like Jesus!
