Either/Or… And/Also…

First, notice it says “when the number of the disciples was multiplying, “ (Acts 6:1). Discipleship was happening not just conversions. We have been commanded to make disciples. Let’s go after discipleship as the church.

With any growth obstacles will come and this is exactly what is happening in the early church. This shouldn’t be discouraging it should be encouraging… why? Because discipleship is happening!  So, the apostles appoint what would be first deacons to help with serving the people. One of the deacons is written about, “And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.” (Acts 6:8).

Even though Stephen was appointed to serving matters in the church he excelled in spiritual things as well. The apostles didn’t stop serving either they just excelled in spiritual matters. Remember, it’s not either/or, it’s and/also. You may be appointed in sharing/teaching the Word of God but it’s important you serve the people practically as well. The same goes for those appointed to practical service… you can excel in teaching the Word also! We get to serve and share its AND/ALSO not EITHER/OR.

Also, don’t wait to be appointed where you fellowship go ahead and step up to serve. There always a need! See the need, do the deed!
