The church of Corinth had already said yes and because of their yes Jesus was glorified, Jesus was thanked, and people were encouraged.

Paul begins by affirming the generosity of the church in Corinth. He organizes a way for them to give so those potentially traveling with him are encouraged as well. Paul says he has spoken highly of the church and their generosity. Remember, this is after one of the strongest letters of correction written by Paul. So cool to see the grace of God so evident.

Paul then says, “For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God. Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all,” 2 Corinthians 9:12-13

When we’re generous we meet a practical need, Jesus is glorified, Jesus is thanked, and the Gospel is shared.

Do you think the church of Corinth ever physically saw the fruit of their obedience? Our generosity should be out of obedience not to receive thanks, or even to see results. This is for sure encouraging, but our generosity should be rooted in Jesus and for His glory. So, let’s be generous with willingness and purpose of heart for the glory of Jesus.
