A couple of Jesus’ disciples had their mom ask Jesus for leadership positions in His coming reign. Jesus says, “Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink…?” (Matthew 20:22). They didn’t understand what this meant but said they were able. Jesus then confirms they will drink from the same cup.

Paul writes to the church of Corinth in a personal way explaining aspects of ministry. Even detailing the difference between the old and new covenant, “For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.” (2 Corinthians 3:9). Paul then writes, “Therefore, since we have this ministry.. we do not lose heart.” (2 Corinthians 4:1).

The cup Jesus spoke of and the ministry Paul explains is one of the same. Are you a disciple of Jesus? If so, Jesus says, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23). At times being a disciple is difficult. Denying oneself, turning the other cheek, giving more than what’s asked are part of the cup we must drink from. But, but… “we do not lose heart” “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,” 2 Corinthians 4:17

Yes, being a disciple of Jesus is difficult at times, “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— “2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Let's not focus on the difficulty but focus on the fragrance of life that comes with obedience in following Jesus. It’s well worth the sacrifice. We are fruit of Jesus’ sacrifice and offer the hope He’s offered us. So, let’s be hope dealers of the glorious grace and goodness Jesus has offered us. For the joy of the Lord is our strength!
