As the kingdom has been passed to Solomon we read of an interaction in a dream with the Lord. Instead of asking for selfish means Solomon asks for the ability to serve the people. So, in return the Lord not only extends wisdom but also wealth and honor.

There is much we could unpack here but let’s focus on one for the moment, “And Solomon said to God: “You have shown great mercy to David my father, and have made me king in his place. Now, O Lord God, let Your promise to David my father be established, for You have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.” 2 Chronicles 1:8-9

David was anything but a perfect father/parent but from the testimony of Solomon we come to the conclusion of a couple truths.

David lived a life where the evidence of the Lord’s mercy was upon Him. What does this teach us?

1- Being transparent and vulnerable with our kids is an important part of them seeing the mercy of God. We’ve fall short and when we do explaining the mercies of God to them in and through our lives will leave a lasting impact on them.

David communicated the promises of God to his son. It stuck to Solomon and in his dreams he repeated them. What does this teach us?

2- Communicating God’s promises through Scripture and His active promises throughout our lives is imperative. Even if it’s when our kids our older there’s a lasting impact that’s goes well beyond any work of human means. Speak what God is doing today and as He fulfills these in our lives our kids will see His faithfulness.
