As we read Paul’s letter to the church of Corinth he writes about hearing of divisions among them. “Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?” 1 Corinthians 1:12-13

We often find our identity attached to our pastor(s), the organization of the church, or even our own good works. The church in Corinth was doing the same. Notice, what Paul had instituted prior to this, “I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.” 1 Corinthians 1:14-15, 17

Paul didn’t make it about himself. He also didn’t baptize many but focused on his calling to preach the gospel. Paul talking about preaching he testifies he didn’t overemphasize the presentation of the message as well. Paul simply depended on the Spirit of God to do the work of the salvation. He was simply obedient to the leading of the Lord.

Have you focused too much on what church you belong to? Or the clout of your pastor as verification of your Christlikeness? Have you passed up the chance to share with your neighbor, co-worker, or family member because you thought your presentation wasn’t as good compared to others?

Let’s just be faithful to share when the door is open, pray when the Spirit’s leading, and trust in the finished work of Christ. Focusing on anything or anyone else is misplaced focus and ineffective. Let’s make it about Jesus because it is all about Jesus… or at least should be!
