You could loosely put God’s law into 3 categories: Civil, Ceremonial, and Moral. The ceremonial law was fulfilled as Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice forever making clean those who put their faith in Him. The moral law is what’s written on our hearts (Romans 2:15) and will not pass away (Matthew 5:18). The civil law is what we read about in this chapter and most of Deuteronomy. God ruled His people civilly until Israel asked for their own king. God gave them the desires of their heart (1 Samuel 8) to their own detriment.

As the chapter begins we read, “If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’—which you have not known—‘and let us serve them,’” Deuteronomy 13:1-2

There will be many imitators of God; has been and will always be. The greatest fake will come looking as the greatest good. But remember, the Father will never contradict His Word. So, if someone comes doing signs and wonders but tries to turn your worship away from the Father, RUN! Any work of a prophet, pastor, teacher, evangelizer will turn you to the Lord and lead you to worship Him more.

“You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear Him and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.” Deuteronomy 13:4
