Oh the trouble we have...

Isaiah continues his prophecy from chapter 7. As we read prophecy, it's important to remember that many prophecies unfold across different periods of time. The northern tribes would eventually suffer complete defeat by the Assyrians. Judah would survive, but not without great suffering and loss, as described in 2 Kings 18.

At one point, the Jewish people called on Assyria for help in their time of trouble. Now, the very nation they once turned to would become part of their downfall.

Isaiah warns: "And when they say to you, "Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter," should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?" Isaiah 8:19

The people didn't just seek help from other nations; they also looked for guidance and answers apart from God Himself. They were called to seek the Lord alone, yet they failed to do so, and the repercussions continued.

Where do you turn when troubles start?

The Lord is calling us to turn to Him in every situation. Yet we can easily find ourselves looking for help in other places, some empty, some even dark. But there is no place more fulfilling, more steady, or more life giving than the presence of the Lord.

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills- From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber." Psalms 121:1-3
