Sanctuary!
Ezekiel's vision comes to an end. The Lord reveals the sins of specific men and instructs Ezekiel not only to witness the vision but also to share what he has seen with those in captivity. Yet, even in the midst of Israel's sin and judgment, the Lord makes an incredibly comforting declaration.
"Therefore say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Although I have cast them far off among the Gentiles, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet I shall be a little sanctuary for them in the countries where they have gone." '" Ezekiel 11:16
The depth of grace and mercy in these words is astonishing!
I've often heard people misrepresent the character of God when reading through the Old Testament Scriptures. They say things like, "There's so much judgment," or "God seems to punish people so much." But when we truly examine the Scriptures, we must also consider passages like Ezekiel 11:16.
"Yet I shall be a little sanctuary for them..."
Think about that! Even in their blatant sin, even in the midst of His righteous judgment, the Lord promises to be a sanctuary for His people. Though they had been removed from their land and separated from the temple, they had not been separated from His presence. His discipline did not mean He had abandoned them.
His faithfulness was rooted in His own character and covenant promises, not in their ability to earn His mercy.
If we could truly grasp this truth, it would fundamentally change the way we live. Imagine recognizing the incredible depth of His grace and mercy, even when we fall short!
Today, remember that through Jesus Christ, we have this same assurance of God's presence. No matter where you find yourself or what circumstances surround you, the Lord is your sanctuary. He is your refuge, your peace, and your place of rest.
So go to Him! Talk to Him! Rest in Him! Whatever you are facing today, remember that His presence is not confined to a place or circumstance.
He is our sanctuary!
