Paul encouraged the church in Thessaloniki their faith had been an example to many in ch 1. In ch 2 he remembered what himself and others went through to share the Gospel. "But even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict." 1 Thess 2:2

Paul had been beaten and arrested in Philippi prior to coming to Thessaloniki. When they shared the Gospel with Thessaloniki there was even more persecution. Those who rejected the message beat Jason, who hosted Paul (Ref Acts 16-18). There was great opposition and oppression towards the Gospel, but it didn't stop Paul and team from loving. Paul even describes his love as a motherly and fatherly love (v7,11).

As I consider this I'm wondering what gets me off my game. What does it take for me to respond in an unloving way? Paul's connection with the Lord strengthened him to live out his purpose in Christ.

The Holy Spirit enables us to walk in the same depth of love. When we're connecting with the Lord our confidence is built and it enables us to love no matter what. Draw near to the Lord, and He will draw near to you!
